Hachette Drops AI Controversy Novel Shy Girl Amid Growing Industry Scrutiny

Due to suspicions that artificial intelligence was used in its creation, Hachette Book Group has decided against publishing the novel Shy Girl in the United States. The book, which was scheduled for release in the spring, was withdrawn by the publisher following an internal review. A decision was also made to halt distribution in the United Kingdom, where the book had already appeared on shelves.

Interestingly, the debate surrounding the text’s origins had ignited well before the official decision: readers on Goodreads and video bloggers on YouTube were the first to raise suspicions. The New York Times, meanwhile, had reached out to Hachette for comment the day before the review’s findings were announced.

Author Mia Ballard has vehemently denied the allegations. According to her, she had hired an acquaintance to edit a previously self-published version of the novel, and it was this individual who likely used AI without her knowledge. Ballard stated she is preparing to file a lawsuit, adding that the scandal has dealt a severe blow to both her reputation and her mental health. Industry observers, including author Lincoln Michel, note that such cases present new challenges for publishers, particularly when acquiring works that already exist in other formats.
