OpenAI Bets on Audio as the Next Frontier, Paving the Way for a Screenless Future

OpenAI is consolidating its resources by forming a unified team of engineers, researchers, and product specialists to develop an advanced audio stack. This restructuring is more than just an upgrade to the voice assistant in ChatGPT; it’s part of a major strategic shift toward future interfaces where sound, not screens, takes center stage. The ultimate goal is the launch of a personal audio device, expected in about a year.

Audio as the New Universal Interface: An Industry-Wide Trend

OpenAI’s move reflects a broader industry shift where voice and audio are coming to the forefront. Over a third of American households already use smart speakers, and major companies are actively experimenting:

  • Meta has integrated a five-microphone array into its Ray-Ban smart glasses for clear audio capture.
  • Google is testing an audio format for search results, delivering them as conversational summaries.
  • Tesla uses the Grok voice assistant for hands-free control of car functions.

A Screenless Future: From Startups to Wearables

Innovation in this sphere isn’t limited to giants. The market is seeing a proliferation of startups offering alternatives to screens: “Friend AI” pendant assistants, screen pins, and even AI rings from Sandbar and Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky. The common concept is to make voice interaction natural and ubiquitous: at home, in the car, and as an element of clothing.

A New Model and the Philosophy of “Companions”

In early 2026, OpenAI plans to release a new audio model expected to make a qualitative leap. It is anticipated to sound extremely natural, support live dialogue with interruptions and responses while the user is speaking, blurring the line between communicating with AI and a live conversation.

The company is also considering creating a whole family of screenless audio devices (smart speakers, glasses) meant to be perceived not as tools, but as “companions.” This philosophy is largely linked to the arrival of legendary former Apple design chief Jony Ive at OpenAI (following the acquisition of his LoveFrom studio for $6.5 billion). Ive sees audio-first design as a way to reduce digital dependency and mitigate the negative impact of gadgets that excessively capture users’ attention.
