OpenAI Reportedly Developing New Music Generation Tool as Suno Makes Previous Model Freely Accessible

According to a report from The Information, OpenAI is developing a new tool capable of generating music based on text descriptions and audio prompts.

Insiders suggest that such an instrument could be used to add music to existing videos or create guitar accompaniments for vocal tracks. It remains unclear when OpenAI plans to release this tool and whether it will be a standalone product or integrated into existing services like ChatGPT or its video generation application, Sora.

To train the model, OpenAI is reportedly collaborating with students from the prestigious Juilliard School to annotate musical scores, providing high-quality data for the AI.

While OpenAI has experimented with generative music models in the past, prior to the launch of ChatGPT, its recent audio focus has been on text-to-speech and speech recognition technologies. This move signals a re-entry into the competitive generative music landscape.

In a related development, the AI music company Suno has made its previous-generation model, Suno 4.5, available for free public use. This move to release a prior, yet still advanced, model for free broadens access to AI music generation and solidifies Suno’s position in a competitive market that also includes giants like Google.
