The AI Streamer Topping the Charts: How Neuro-sama is Redefining Twitch
While many express often-exaggerated fears about AI taking human jobs, one field has emerged where AI is not just competing but excelling: live streaming on Twitch.
Meet Neuro-sama, an endearing AI-powered character who is currently Twitch’s most popular streamer by number of active paid subscribers, according to Twitch Tracker. Broadcasting on the channel Vedal987, Neuro-sama boasts 165,268 active paid subscribers—a significant lead over her closest competitor, the human streamer Jynxzi.
With each Twitch subscription starting at $5 per month, outlet Dexerto estimates that Neuro-sama generates at least $400,000 monthly from subscriptions alone. This figure doesn’t include viewer donations, brand deals, or advertising revenue.
In recent years, Twitch has seen a surge of content creators known as VTubers. These are essentially streamers with one key difference: they use motion capture to adopt a digital voice and appearance, often as animated avatars, to enhance expressiveness and appeal to audiences seeking something beyond conventional reality.
Neuro-sama takes this a step further. Contrary to appearances, this avatar is not controlled by a human behind the scenes—it is entirely AI-generated. The channel’s owner, known only as Vedal, has been working on it full-time since at least 2023, as reported by Bloomberg.
According to the report, the avatar’s dialogue is first created using a large language model, then converted into speech via a separate AI voice synthesis application.
Although Neuro-sama was originally intended just for streaming the rhythm game Osu, it has essentially developed a life of its own: discussing a wide range of topics with subscribers who interact with the language model in real-time through Twitch’s built-in chat.
“Part of it is the novelty,” Vedal explained to Bloomberg regarding the character’s popularity. “And part of it is what she says. She can be pretty chaotic and say things that people normally wouldn’t say.”
Although Neuro-sama currently reigns supreme among active Twitch streamers, it still has a way to go to break the platform’s all-time subscriber record: the channel currently holds only 8th place in Twitch history.
