Google Maps Gets a Massive Makeover: It’s Now a 3D Movie Theater with an AI Assistant
Google has announced its biggest navigation update in 10 years. Forget flat maps — you can now enable “Immersive Navigation” in Maps. The road turns into a 3D image with buildings, bridges, and interchanges, while a smart AI highlights only the essentials: signs, crosswalks, and traffic lights, so the screen doesn’t get cluttered.
The Gemini neural network is running the show behind the scenes. It processes tons of data from Street View and satellites to make sure drivers don’t miss their turn in unfamiliar areas.
But that’s not all. The voice assistant finally sounds more human: instead of saying “turn onto Highway 101,” it can now say, “skip this exit and turn at the next one.” When suggesting a detour to avoid traffic, the map will honestly explain the trade-off — for example, that the route is longer but free of jams.
The coolest new feature is the built-in Gemini chatbot right inside Maps. The “Ask Maps” button lets you search for places using simple language. Need a café for a quick bite where you can also charge your phone? Just type that into the search, and the AI will comb through the entire database, consider your likes, and give you ready-made options. And you can book a table right from there.
The 3D navigation has already started rolling out in the US. Soon it will be available on Android, iOS, CarPlay, and Android Auto. The text-based assistant is currently working in the mobile version for the US and India, but it will soon make its way to computers as well.
