Moonmax Announces AI-Assisted Captain Hook Film “James”

AI studio Moonmax has announced an ambitious slate of feature films, including “James,” a origin story of Captain Hook from J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. The project traces the famous pirate’s journey from Royal Navy officer to mutiny and piracy, offering a psychological portrait of the classic antagonist rather than a simple hero-villain showdown.

The production uses a hybrid approach: motion-to-video technology captures live actor performances and integrates them with AI-driven post-production and visual effects. Real actors will be involved, with AI serving as a post-production tool. Executive producer is Elliot Grove, founder of the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) and the Raindance Film Festival.

Despite embracing technology, Moonmax maintains a balanced position. “We believe the future will be hybrid, not fully AI-driven,” said CEO Daniel Gordon, who also heads AI initiatives at Raindance and the American Film Market (AFM). “The best creative projects will prioritize human craft and talent — developing stories before touching a computer, then selectively using AI for execution.”

Other projects in Moonmax’s slate include “People of the Wolf,” an adaptation of the New York Times bestselling series “North America’s Forgotten Past” by Kathleen and Michael Gear, blending live-action with AI-driven animation techniques, and “Snowbear,” an original family film about a displaced yeti, serving as an allegory for habitat loss and climate change.

Beyond production, Moonmax operates as an educational platform, offering AI courses and conducting lectures at Oxford University and the Miami Film Festival. Recently, in partnership with MiniMax, the company held an AI film masterclass at Miami Dade College.

“James” and the other projects are currently in development. No casting, production timeline, or release date details have been revealed yet. However, the project’s emergence from a company with serious educational and industry connections signals that hybrid AI-human production methods are becoming a legitimate tool in modern cinema.
