Stan Lee’s AI Hologram Debuted at Comic Con to Mixed Fan Reactions

At the Los Angeles Comic Con festival, a hologram of Stan Lee, created using artificial intelligence, was presented. This idea sparked mixed reactions from fans, but the organizers stated that Lee himself had supported the idea of his “digital immortality” during his lifetime and began the digitization process.

The legendary creator of Marvel characters, who passed away in 2018, “appeared” at the event as a full-size, interactive holographic avatar. It was reported that visitors could interact with the digital double for a small fee. However, the innovation was met with a wave of criticism, with some fans and journalists expressing outrage, calling the project creepy and inappropriate.

In response to the criticism, the festival’s CEO, Chris DeMoulin, urged the public not to judge prematurely and to evaluate the technology firsthand. He explained that the avatar is not just a static image—it’s an interactive system based on an extensive archive of Lee’s real interviews and statements. The developers paid special attention to recreating his unique manner of speaking, including characteristic pauses and famous phrases, to make the hologram sound authentic.

DeMoulen also noted that he received approval from the rights holders of the Stan Lee brand before launching the project. For them, this avatar is a way to allow new generations of fans to interact with the creator’s legacy in a special way.

The technical side was handled by the companies Proto Hologram and Hyperreal. The model was trained on a vast dataset of Lee’s recorded performances, written works, and other materials collected over decades. Hyperreal emphasized that Stan Lee himself saw this technology as a way to remain connected with his fans on a global scale.

At the same time, DeMoulin understands that using AI copies of famous personalities can raise ethical debates. He assured that he respects this point of view and agrees with the potential risks of irresponsible use of the technology.

The festival head added that the project is an experiment. If it doesn’t resonate with the majority of fans, it will be discontinued. For now, the company suggests viewing the hologram as a new format for digital interaction with past icons.
