Spotify Tightens Rules on AI-Generated Content

The streaming service Spotify is tightening its policies regarding the use of artificial intelligence for creating music and other content. This decision is part of its effort to combat spam, fraud, and other abuses on its platform—over 75 million tracks violating its rules were removed in the last year alone.

The company acknowledges that while generative AI offers new creative tools for artists, it is also being exploited by bad actors and “content farms” to mislead listeners and flood the platform with low-quality material, which hinders the progress of genuine performers.

Key changes to Spotify’s policy:

  1. Crackdown on Voice Cloning. Stricter measures are being introduced against the unauthorized use of AI to clone the voices of well-known artists and upload fake tracks to their official profiles.
  2. Spam Filter. A new system, launching in the autumn, will automatically detect and block mass uploads, duplicate content, tracks with artificially inflated titles (SEO manipulation), and short “micro-tracks” created solely to game streaming numbers.
  3. AI Disclosure Requirements. Spotify is working with industry partners to develop standards that will require creators to disclose the use of AI in the production process. The primary goal of this measure is transparency for listeners, not to punish authors.

In essence, the platform encourages the responsible use of AI in creativity but is taking a stand against its use to deceive the audience and generate unoriginal content.
